Two Launches Successfully Put Payloads into Orbit

A Soyuz launch vehicle has successfully launched a Progress resupply capsule on a path to theInternational Space Station (ISS). It is the 50th Progress capsule launched to the ISS. The 11 February launch from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, puts the Progress on a relatively direct path to the ISS, previously flown by only one other resupply mission. Atlas V launches NASA Data Relay Satellite

On 30 January an Atlas V successfully launched a NASA data relay satellite from Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The satellite has reached its target orbit and its controllers have confirmed good signal reception. The Atlas V flew in 401 configuration, with a 4m payload fairing, no solid-fuel rocket boosters and a single RL-10A-4 engine in the upper stage. Japanese Reconnaissance Satellite Launched

Japan has successfully orbited two satellites during a 27 January launch at Tanegashima, Japan, in the nation’s first launch of 2013. The larger satellite, a radar satellite called Information Gathering Satellite (IGS-4D), completes Japan’s latest constellation of similar spy satellites. IGS-4D is meant to replace a similar satellite, launched in 2003, that lost radar abilities while in orbit. A newly-formed company, Deep Space Industries, has announced a plan to mine asteroids flying by the Earth. The company intends to send small, lightweight modified cubesats (small, standardized, modular satellites) on missions to mineral-rich asteroids as they pass near Earth’s orbit, returning small samples to Earth orbit for exploitation.
